Meet Our Oral Surgeon: Dr. Robert E. Johnson

Dr. Robert E. Johnson is a third-generation dentist continuing his family's 80-year legacy of oral surgery care in Seattle. He is the only oral surgeon in Mukilteo with degrees in both dentistry (DMD) and medicine (MD), giving him a uniquely holistic approach to dental and surgical care. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Washington, completed his dental training at Tufts University in Boston, and returned to Seattle for medical school, a general surgery internship, and residency training in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

His surgical training spans dental implants, wisdom teeth extractions, bone grafting, facial trauma, TMJ treatment, and head and neck pathology, with clinical experience at leading hospitals including Harborview Medical Center and the University of Washington Medical Center. Known for his calm, reassuring demeanor, Dr. Johnson takes time to understand each patient's concerns and works to make every surgical experience as comfortable and personalized as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the real difference between a general dentist and an oral surgeon?

An oral and maxillofacial surgeon completes years of training beyond dental school — often including medical school and hospital-based surgical residency. That extra training prepares them for complex cases involving trauma, pathology, and advanced bone or implant work that falls outside what a general dentist typically handles.

How do I know if I actually need a bone graft before getting an implant?

A CBCT scan taken during your consultation shows exactly how much bone is present at the treatment site. If there isn't enough to support an implant safely, a bone graft is recommended first to rebuild that foundation before implant placement moves forward.

Do all wisdom teeth eventually need to come out?

No. Some wisdom teeth come in properly aligned and never cause a problem. Others become impacted or crowded and need removal to prevent pain, infection, or damage to nearby teeth — an exam and imaging will show which situation applies to you.

Is jaw surgery the only real fix for TMJ pain?

Not usually. Most patients find relief through conservative treatment first, like a night guard, physical therapy, or medication. Surgery is generally reserved for cases that don't improve through less invasive options.
